What is Model Context Protocol (MCP)?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI applications connect to external tools and data sources, such as ticketing, design or browser tools, through a common interface.

AI agents become useful when they can reach the systems a team already works in. The Model Context Protocol defines a common way for AI applications to talk to tool servers, so one integration, for example to an issue tracker, a design tool or a browser, can be used by any compatible agent.

What it means for enterprises

  • Agents can work with existing systems instead of copies of data.
  • Each connection is a separate server that can be approved, scoped and audited.
  • Teams can add or remove capabilities without changing the agent itself.
