What is AI guardrails?

AI guardrails are the technical and process controls, such as permissions, approvals, tests and monitoring, that keep AI agents operating safely within agreed limits.

Guardrails are what turn a capable agent into one an enterprise can trust. They limit what an agent can access and change, check its output, and make sure people see and approve the decisions that matter.

Common guardrails in software delivery

  • Scoped permissions per agent role, for example read-only reviewers.
  • Mandatory tests, checks and reviews on every agent change.
  • Human approval for plans, merges and releases.
  • Logs and audit trails of what each agent did.
  • Cost and usage limits.
