What is Agent orchestration?

Agent orchestration is coordinating several AI agents, and the people overseeing them, so that a multi-step piece of work is planned, divided, executed and verified reliably.

Once more than one agent is involved, someone has to decide who does what, in which order, and what happens when a step fails. That coordination is agent orchestration. It can be done by a lead agent, by a workflow engine, or by a person, and in enterprises it is usually a mix.

What good orchestration includes

  • A clear plan that a human can approve before work starts.
  • Hand-offs between agents with defined inputs and outputs.
  • Checkpoints where results are tested, reviewed or approved.
  • Visibility: a record of what each agent did and why.
